Pavement Engineering

Pavement Engineering in Southern California

Many of the pavements such as asphalt concrete (AC) pavements are typically designed for a 20-year design life, and without proper maintenance, these pavements deteriorate and lose their strength. As the pavement loses its strength, distresses such as alligator cracks, longitudinal and transverse cracks, and potholes occurs, which are aesthetically unpleasant, but also uncomfortable for the commuter. Not all pavements are created the same, and some pavements take additional evaluation and “out-of-the-box” analysis to ensure that they are either maintained, re-constructed, or newly-constructed properly and economically. Our pavement engineering department has evaluated, rehabilitated and recommended new pavements for thousands of miles.

Some of the pavement engineering services we provide to evaluate the condition of existing pavement is as follows:

  • Pavement Evaluation: Performing visual observation of the existing pavement to determine the type of distresses that the pavement has experience, which allows us to determine pavement condition index (PCI). The PCI helps us to categorize the pavement from poor to good condition, which is a critical aspect in the type of rehabilitation that can be implemented.
  • Coring: Pavement coring is performed to determine the in-place thickness of the existing asphalt concrete (AC) or Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement, determine the thickness of the aggregate base (AB) that underlie the AC or PCC, if exists, and also collect soil samples for laboratory testing.
  • Pavement Rehabilitation: Based on the pavement evaluation data, coring data, and laboratory testing data, we develop site-specific, cost-effective pavement rehabilitation recommendations.
